Coming Together, Working Together, Making A Difference
Volunteering For Oakland (VFO) is a community action group that enables citizen involvement in positive community enriching actions. Our goal is to mobilize citizens toward taking on meaningful tasks resulting in community improvement.
Over the past years, we have hosted fair venues to help school oriented non-profits recruit volunteers for their individual education projects; we have collected school supplies for distribution to students who have financial challenges; we helped develop the idea now carried on by the Friends of Oakland Public Schools Library group; and currently we are purchasing and gifting a student dictionary and gazetteer to third graders in Oakland schools. In the environmental area we founded Greening Oakland Homes which helped Oakland residents learn about possibilities for upgrade their homes. This included participating in several Oakland summer street fairs as “The Green Zone” and presenting information in several Alameda County sponsored neighborhood information meetings.
VFO continues to address the issues of willing volunteers. Individually, it just takes 2 hours to change your community, whether that’s each week, each month, or just periodically. The collective leverage of those 2 hour contributions can be amazing (and a lot of fun).
